Is it necessary to have the Rabies Inoculation when visiting Vietnam?

Whether you need a rabies vaccine when traveling to Vietnam depends on your travel plans, activities, and destinations. Here are some key considerations:

When Should You Get a Rabies Vaccine?

  1. Traveling to rural or remote areas: If you’re visiting regions with wildlife or stray animals, especially dogs and cats, your risk of exposure increases.
  2. Engaging in outdoor activities: Activities like hiking, camping, or frequent contact with animals may put you at higher risk.
  3. Long-term stays: If you’re staying in Vietnam for an extended period, especially in high-risk areas, pre-exposure vaccination is advisable.

Additional Tips:

  • If bitten or scratched, wash the wound immediately with soap and water, and seek medical care for a rabies vaccine (and rabies immune globulin if needed).
  • Rabies vaccines are available in Vietnam, but it’s best to get vaccinated before your trip if you’re at high risk or may have limited access to healthcare.

Consult a doctor or travel clinic for personalized advice before your trip!

Cuong Vinh: Don’t eat dog meat ! Just kidding. A wise person from Western countries would be prepared for certain vaccinations before taking an adventure in a third world country.

Even myself, after more than 40 years living in the States, my immune system is weak compared to local people and I get sick easily when going back. The truth is always the truth. Be prepared. I almost died over there. 2 of my friends died because of lack and inadequate health services. Be wise.

Russell Southey: Seriously, I’ve been to Vietnam lots, I’ve never heard of these vaccines let alone contemplated having them, and I haven’t caught anything, not even an STD 🤣🤣

Jane Oakley: Didn’t have any

Nata Sha-Sha: My partner got bit by a rabid dog in India… it freaked me out… I’m an ED physician know enough and have administered RIg and the series before many times. we got him the immunoglobulin and rabies series. Travel insurance covered it all.

I would get the vaccine if offered. It is fatal if not treated and you have a small window to get treatment… if far away, or not on a huge town/city, the treatment may not be available.

Linda Hart: Truth is, i travel a lot but have not had a rabies shot. I don’t go out of my way to visit monkeys and touch dogs. However, I’ve had hepatitis B shots, yellow fever for countries where it’s present, cholera and typhoid. Whooping cough, measles, shingles, covid, flu vaccine.

I’ve even taken malaria tabs when travelling to places it’s rife.

Donna McMullen: Never had rabies jab, or malaria tabs when visiting Vietnam. Just get Hepatitis and typhoid jab
